Taking Charge of Your Health – Your Personal Health Record

Jan Oldenburg will talk about personal health records and discuss what role they can play in helping you take charge of your health and the health of your family. In the process, she’ll talk about what it took for Kaiser Permanente to create personal health records for its members, what some of the public policy controversies are around personal health records, and what you should consider (and worry about) when you think about managing your personal health records.


Jan is a frequent speaker on personal health record issues, and plays a key role in managing Kaiser’s kp.org site. Her background includes 25 years of management with a focus on the intersection of health care and new technologies. Ms Oldenburg joined Kaiser Permanente in 2005 to guide the initial launch of Personal Health Record capabilities. She is currently a Senior Manager in the Internet Services Group with a focus on helping consumers engage with and understand both their health and health care, and a frequent speaker on Personal Health issues.

Prior to joining Kaiser, Ms. Oldenburg was the principal in several consulting companies specializing in strategies for using the Internet effectively in healthcare. Clients included UnitedHealthCare, Medica Health Plan, Kaiser Permanente, Blue Cross – Blue Shield of Minnesota, and Medtronic.

Ms. Oldenburg has been a Northern California HIMSS Board member since 2003 and is currently the chapter Secretary and a HIMSS fellow. She has been responsible for programs on emerging technologies and Personal Health Records. She is a member of several healthcare standards committees.
