SUMMARY:Dr. Judy Miner on "The Benefits of Community Colleges"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Judy C. Miner assumed the presidency of Foothill College on July 1\, 2007. She has worked as a higher education administrator since 1977 and in the California Community Colleges since 1979 when City College of San Francisco selected her as the Dean of Admissions and Records. In the mid-1980s\, she held two positions at the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office: special assistant to the vice chancellor for Student Services and program coordinator for the Transfer Center Pilot Program. Beginning in 1988\, Dr. Miner then served De Anza College for eighteen and a half years in a number of positions including those of dean of Matriculation Services and instructor of history; acting dean of Special Education; dean of Academic Services; provost of Arts\, Letters and Social Sciences; interim president; and ultimately\, vice president of Instruction. \nDr. Miner earned her B.A.\, summa cum laude\, in history and French at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco; her M.A. in history at that same college; and her Ed.D. in organization and leadership (with a concentration in education law) from the University of San Francisco. \nA devotee of the performing arts\, Dr. Miner particularly loves combining opera and travel as evidenced by trips to Santa Fe\, Salzburg\, Sydney\, and Stockholm to name just the cities starting with “S.” She is a bibliophile who founded the Foothill Authors Series in order to inspire a passion for reading through presentations by writers who are passionate about their craft. Scrabble is another favorite pastime of hers and her highest single word score to date is “ARACHNID” for 158 points. \nShe will talk about higher education in California\, and the impact of Foothill’s Chancellor\, Martha Kanter’s recent nomination as Under Secretary of Education. Despite the budget cuts\, I have no doubt Judy will provide an upbeat view of the future. She’s an energetic and optimistic person who will give us all a great insight into the workings of Foothill College\, its creativity and innovation.
