January: Business Meeting
We discussed the purpose of the group, elected officers and committee chairs, brainstormed ways to expand our member base and improve the group, and collected annual dues.

February: Nora Denzel, Sr. VP and Corporate Officer, Legato Systems
Nora spoke on "The Top 10 Ways Women Shoot Themselves in the Foot in the Workplace". She has over 14 years experience and prior to joining Legato was the director of IBM's storage management software products. She outlined the most common mistakes that women make in the corporate world and how to avoid them.

March: Karen Csejtey, Director, Women's Entrepreneurs Program at the Mid-Peninsula YWCA
Karen spoke about women's entrepreneurship and how to help teen girls think about economic self-sufficiency. Prior to her work at the YWCA, she was Executive Director of Touchstone Support Network, a nonprofit agency serving children with life-threatening illnesses. She owned and operated two businesses, co-founded two nonprofit agencies, managed a local business association, and served with VISTA (domestic Peace Corps) in Appalachia, helping to start a cottage industry.

April: Member Forum - Girls in Science & Technology
The April meeting was a member forum. We had a spirited discussion about how to keep girls interested and involved in science, math, and technology.

May: Jan Pepper, Automated Power Exchange
Jan has 18 years of experience in electric power, renewable energy, and marketing activities. She is currently Director of Green Power Marketing for Automated Power Exchange (APX), a start-up company which is operating a commodity-like exchange for wholesale buyers and sellers of electricity in California's deregulated electricity industry.

June: Anita Borg, Xerox PARC and the Institute for Women & Technology
Anita is the head of the Institute for Women and Technology, an organization focused on increasing gender diversity in the technology industry and impacting women through the development of high technology tools and products, and a member of the research staff at the Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). She received the Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Augusta Lovelace Award from the Association of Women in Computing.

July: Audrey Soule, Middle School Math & Science Teacher
Audrey discussed how she became an electrical engineer and what caused her to decide to become a middle school teacher. Audrey also takes the lead in bringing technology into the school.

August: Colleen Wilcox, Santa Clara County Superintendant of Schools
Colleen has been County Superintendant of Schools for Santa Clara County since February 1994. Prior to that, she was Superintendant of the Northern Suburban Special Education District serving the North Shore area of Chicago. A speech pathologist by training, she served as a special education administrator in Los Angeles and as Assistant Superintendant in Tucson, Arizona.

September: Sue Wilhite, Certified Medical Hypnotherapist
After a career in technology, Sue decided to become a hypnotherapist and, working in conjunction with a medical doctor, helps patients cope with the pain of serious or chronic illnesses. She explained the appropriate uses of hypnotherapy.

October: Elana Rosen, Founder & Executive Director, Just Think Foundation
Elana has an incredible background in media including developing award-winning documentaries for KQED, working with Bill Moyers, and working with George Lucas in his non-profit institute. In 1995, she founded Just Think to teach media literacy for the 21st century. The foundation helps kids, teachers, and parents to learn to develop critical thinking about media and to deconstruct the images they see.

Novemeber: Gail Turner, VP, Dale Carnegie and Aviator
Gail specializes in developing human potential through the power of enthusiasm and shared with us her inspiring stories. Gail has owned and operated an electroplating plant manufacturing hydraulic piston rods, and has built and test flown two experimental aircraft.

December: Kim Haddad, veterinarian, San Francisco Zoo volunteer
Kim left a career in futures trading to become a veterinarian and volunteer at the San Francisco Zoo. She brought slides and shared her adventures as a zoo and wildlife veterinarian.
