Firoozeh Dumas on “Humor as Shared Humanity”

Firoozeh Dumas, who was born in Iran, moved permanently to California at the age of twelve. Her first book, Funny in Farsi, humorously recounts her life growing up Iranian in America with colorful stories about her family and school life. The book has been on the SF Chronicle and LA Times bestseller lists, and has been a finalist for the PEN/USA award, the prestigious Thurber Prize for American Humor and the Audie Award for best audio book.

Funny in Farsi has been selected for one-book community reads on both the West and East Coasts, from Palo Alto and Orange County to Cape Ann in Massachusetts. The book has been placed on the California Recommended Reading List and is used in many junior high, high schools and universities. Ms. Dumas has commented on NPR and has been published in the NY Times, LA Times, SF Chronicle Magazine, and Lifetime Magazine. The Persian version of Funny in Farsi is currently the bestselling book in Iran and was voted the Readers’ Choice Award from a leading Iranian magazine for twenty-somethings. Firoozeh is now working on her second book, Last Mango in Paris.
